Today, I will create a simple proof of concept shell script to display the message provided from standard input or parameter. It could be used as a template to write shell scripts that can be executed in a pipe or as a standalone application.

Examples

Execute without any parameters.

$ bash message.sh
Error: Message is empty or not provided using standard input.

Display usage information.

$ bash message.sh -h
Print message provided from standard input or as an parameter

Parameters:
 (none)       - set message from standard input
 -h           - help
 -m "message" - set message using parameter
 -t "message" - set message from standard input or using this parameter if the first one is empty

Examples:

Provide a message using standard input.

$ cat /proc/meminfo | head -1 | bash message.sh

Provide message as parameter.

Provide an alternative message in case the provided message is empty.
